Web.dev Measure Review

★★★★½ 4.6 / 5

A web-based Lighthouse runner that saves your audit history so you can track how your performance score changes over time, making it useful for monitoring the impact of your optimisation work.

What is Web.dev Measure?

Web.dev Measure is essentially Lighthouse in a browser tab, but with one very useful addition: it saves your results. Every time you run an audit on a URL, the score is stored in your Google account, so you can come back later and see a timeline of how your performance, accessibility, and SEO scores have changed. That historical view is something you don’t get from running Lighthouse directly in DevTools, and it’s surprisingly handy for demonstrating the impact of optimisation work to clients or stakeholders.

The tool runs the same audit engine as Lighthouse, so the scores and recommendations are identical. You’ll see the same breakdown of LCP, Total Blocking Time, CLS, and the other Lighthouse metrics, along with the same Opportunities and Diagnostics sections. What you won’t get is any real-user field data. Web.dev Measure is a lab testing tool, so it reflects simulated conditions rather than what your actual visitors are experiencing. If you want both lab and field data in one place, Google PageSpeed Insights is the better choice.

Where I think Web.dev Measure earns its place is as a lightweight alternative to setting up a full monitoring service. If you’re a developer who wants to keep an informal eye on a handful of pages without paying for a dedicated monitoring tool, logging in and running a quick check every couple of weeks is easy and free. The web.dev site itself is also packed with excellent learning resources on web performance, so it’s a good place to spend time if you’re still getting to grips with Core Web Vitals. It’s not the most powerful tool in this list, but it’s a sensible, friction-free option.
