If you’re serious about keyword research, Semrush is almost certainly the first tool you’ll encounter, and for good reason. The Keyword Magic Tool is the centrepiece of the platform’s research suite, giving you access to a database of over 25 billion keywords. You type in a seed term and Semrush generates an enormous list of related phrases, questions, and long-tail variants, all organised by topic cluster. It’s genuinely one of the most comprehensive keyword discovery experiences available.
I find the Keyword Difficulty score particularly useful. It’s not the simplest metric to understand at first, but once you get to grips with it you can make fast, reliable decisions about which terms are worth pursuing. The competitive gap tools are another standout feature. You can compare your keyword profile against up to five competitors and immediately see which high-value terms they rank for that you don’t. For agencies running competitive campaigns, this is an enormous time-saver.
The honest downside is the price. At $139.95 per month for the Pro plan, it’s a meaningful investment, and some of the more powerful features like historical data and extended limits sit behind the Guru plan at $249.95 per month. If you’re a solo blogger or just starting out, the cost can feel hard to justify. There’s also a lot happening in the Semrush interface, and new users can find it overwhelming. That said, if keyword research is central to your work, the depth and accuracy of the data make it worth every penny.
